GOD IS OUR STRENGTH, A REFUGE AND A SHADOW
“ For thou hast been a strength to the poor. A strength to the needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a shadow from the heat, when the blast of the terrible ones is as a storm against the wall” ( Isaiah 25:4).

This Scripture verse is the promise message for this month. There are 4 things God has been to men:

  1. strength to the poor in poverty
  2. strength to the needy in distress
  3. a refuge from the storm
  4. a shadow from the heat

God is all these 4 things to men who trust in Him whenever the terrible ones storm into the land like the blast. This kind of a statement always refer to the quickly invasion of a country ( v.4, 27:7; 1 ki.19:7). This verse shows the Coastal Protection measures by construction of Coastal Structures. We need to protect valuable coastal properties. These valuable properties include:

  • cultivable lands,
  • Beach resorts,
  • Industrial complexes,
  • Ports and Harbors and
  • Above all people living along coast

Remedial Measures for Coastal Protection:

In managing the Coastal Zone, there are short term measures and Long Term measures. Short term measures include Sea Walls, Anti Sea erosion bunds, Revetments, Groins, Bulkheads. Long term measures are: Offshore Breakwaters, Beach nourishment by sand, sand by passing, vegetative plantation and sand dunes.

1. GOD IS A STRENGTH TO THE POOR

The poor are not having enough money to have a comfortable life. Some of the families are too poor to buy new clothes. Richer countries could do more to help poor countries. We should feel sorry for them, and have compassion towards poor. Isaiah 25:4 says, Firstly, “ For thou hast been a strength to the poor,…”

God is the strength to the poor. Poor people are looking for good food, clean water, Good House, Electricity, Agricultural equipments, etc., as their basic needs. David was anointed as king. Yet, he experienced many troubles in his life. He says in Psalm 40: 17:

God, you are constantly thinking upon the poor to them, to deliver them and strengthen me. God of all grace, I praise you.

2. GOD IS A STRENGTH TO THE NEEDY IN HIS DISTRESS

Let us understand the word: need. 1. a situation in which you must have or do something,; we are all in need of rest; there is a growing need for new books in schools. 2. the things that you must have; he doesn’t even earn enough to pay for his basic needs; Parents must consider their children’s emotional as well as their physical needs. 3. the state of not having enough food, money or support; a campaign to help families in need.

The Prophet declares: “ God, you are a strength to the needy in his distress”. David was greatly distressed. But, he did not confess his lack and wants. David encouraged himself in the LORD.

DISTRESS: the state of being very upset or of suffering great pain or difficulty. The state of being in great danger and needing immediate help. The ship’s captain radioed that it was in distress. He/she was too distressed to talk. A distressing experience/ illness. Let us read Psalm 46:1

“ God is our refuge and strength, and a very present help in trouble”.

People need strength, Coastal people ( fishermen) need a place or building of refuge. They are in distress. They are shouting at the politicians and false religious leaders for not providing basic needs. No help to the poor people. God, help the poor people, remember the poor, help them immediately.

3. GOD IS A REFUGE FROM THE STORM

Storm means very bad weather, with a lot of rain, strong winds , etc., God manifested in flesh in the human form of Jesus. Jesus proved complete authority over storm. Jesus talking to His disciples once said, ‘ Let us pass over unto the other side”. His disciples took Him even as He was in the ship. And there arose a great storm of wing and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. Ocean Engineers call this scenario as : “ STORM, SHIP AND PEOPLE INTERATION” or Water- Structure and Soil Interaction.

Cyrus was anointed by the LORD. To anoint means to put oil or water on sb’s head as part of a religious The Bible says in Mark 4: 38,39 :“ And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow, and they awoke him, and say unto him, Master carest thou not that we perish? And he arose and rebuked the wind, and said unto he sea, PEACE, BE STILL. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm”.

Three great things mentioned here: i. a great storm of wind, ii. Great Peace, iii. Great reverence ( fear). Is this describes your situation? Jesus speaks Peace to you. Peace be unto you and you family. When Jesus comes into your life, waves ( Regular waves and Random waves) will become still ( SWL = Still Water Level ). You shall experience the Peace of God which passes all understanding. Say: “ Jesus, come into my life( ship) and give me Peace of Mind”. He says: “ Peace, be still”. The wind and the sea obeyed Him.

“ Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus”. ( Philippians 4:6,7).

The disciples presented their requests, prayers to Jesus and He provided them the peace of God, that is God is our Refuge. Harbor means a peaceful Shelter.

4. GOD IS A SHADOW FROM THE HEAT

The Prophet says: “ God, you are a shadow from the heat”. When the temperature increases in the residential area, in the city, or the seashore, God is like a shadow. The Bible says in Psalm 91:1 : “ He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty”.

The shadow of the Almighty is like a good Air- Conditioning system. His shadow provides us healing. When Jesus walked along the seashore and coasal areas of poor people, hey were healed, they saw him as the light of the world. After walking in the hot sunny areas, when you come to the shadow of trees, you breath good air, you are refreshed, renewed and restored. Similarly, God is a shadow from the heat.

A STORM AGAINST A WALL

The Prophet says: “ when the blast of the terrible ones is as a storm against the wall”, God has been a strength to the poor, a strength to the needy in his distress, a refuge from storm, a shadow from the heat. This verse is a prophetical verse about Coastal Engineering Structures.

The causes for a stormy surge in the coastal areas are many. On of the reason is the blast of the terrible ones. When the storm beat vehementally against a wall or a coastal structure, what are the remedial measures/ First of al, An Ocean Engineer must be a wise born again believer obeyibg the words of Jesus, which he said in luke 6:48:

“ He is like a man built an house and digged deep, and laid foundation on a rock and when the flood arose, the sorm beat vehementally upon that house and could not shake it; for ot was founded upon a rock”.

I believe, his my Reasearch theme, which is hidden in this Bible verse.I have read this verse and preached this verse several times. The good news is, this is very very important Bible verse. These are the words of Jesus, the Son of the Living God. Hoe to build a structure?Acoastal structure, Port and Harbor structures, A land based structures! Jesus said:

  1. dig deep,
  2. reach the rock,
  3. lay the foundation on the rock,
  4. Build an house ( or structure), and
  5. The House is stable.

Digging deep means obtaining deep salvation experience. Jesus is the Rock, the natural foundation. Laying the foundation means laying the six foundational doctrine in a believer’s life. Building the house means building the church. The church of Jesus Christ will be the triumphant church. Jesus said: I will build My church upon this rock and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

These are some wonderful truths. There are so much to be explored in this verse. God bless you and your family.
