CHAPTER 2. The Attributes of God

The Attributes of God are divided into two categories. Natural or Moral; Absolute or Relative; and communicable and Incommunicable. Incommunicable attributes express those attributes of God which are distinct to God alone. Communicable attributes are those which can be found in man in an imperfect and finite resemblance.

Incommunicable attributes of God:

1. Self- Existence
2. Eternality
3. Immutability
4. Omnipresence
5. Omnipotence
6. Omnipresence

Communicable Attributes of God:

1. Holiness
2. Righteousness
3. Truthfulness
4. Love
5. Goodness
6. Mercy
7. Sovereignty

The Bible is the Word of God to mankind. Some people are trying to understand God through opinion, conjecture and supposition which are often incorrect. The Attributes of God are revealed in the Bible. The truth about God, Who He is, What He does, and What He is are crucial for our understanding.

God is the Creator of all things. This is one of the primary attributes of God. Psalm 24:1, 2 says: ”The earth is the LORD’s, and all its fullness, the world and those who dwell in. For He has founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the waters”. God made everything according to His perfect plan. He reveals and reflects Himself in the Creation. Heavens declare the glory of God. The creation speaks of God’s attributes.

An attribute is a quality, property or unique characteristic of something. God has certain basic qualities. These include the following:

1. God is eternal
2. He is unchangeable
3. He possesses all power(Omnipotent)
4. He is present everywhere at one and the same time( Omnipresent)
5. He has all knowledge (Omniscient)

1.God is Eternal:

The true God has neither beginning nor ending. An idol is disqualified for it was made by some human being, thus it had beginning. Therefore, it is not god. God is eternal.

“Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, Thou art God” (Psalm 90:2).

“Now to the king eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honour and glory forever and ever. Amen” ( 1.Timothy 1:17). Cf. Psalm 102:24, 27; Isaiah 57:15.

God has always existed. He is the Eternal God, the LORD. The Creator of the ends of the Earth. He gives power to the weak, and to those who have no might, He increases strength. God is eternal, meaning He had no beginning and He will have no end. His existence is one of immortality and infinity.

2. He is unchangeable:

God is so constituted that He cannot change. Man changes from one day to next day. Man changes his words, he is not perfect. God is immutable and unchanging, which means He is absolutely reliable and trustworthy. Mankind cannot comprehend God’s mind.

“For I am the LORD, I change not”(Malachi 3:6). “ And also the strength of Israel will not lie nor repent; for He is not a man, that He should repent”(1 Samuel 15:29).

In God, there is no variableness. He does not change. God is the same yesterday, today and forever. God’s thoughts are not our thoughts and His ways are not our ways. When you are born again, that is when you become a child of God, we can think God’s thoughts and we can walk in God’s ways. “ For who has known the mind of the LORD? Or who has become His counsellor?”(Romans 11:34). “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8).

3. God is Omnipotent:

God is the one who makes everything possible. There is nothing impossible with God. All things are possible. God is having a great potential energy because of His position above all people. Potentate means - a mighty one. God is the blessed, only Potentate, the king of kings and LORD of lords.

God is omnipotent; His power is unlimited and complete.” I know that You can do everything and that no purpose of Yours can be withheld from You” (Job 42:2).“...saying, Alleujah! For the Lord God Omnipotent reigns!” ( Revelation 19:6).“Ah, Lord God! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. There is nothing too hard for You (Jeremiah 32:17). “ Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh. Is there anything too hard for Me?” (Jeremiah 32:27).

Things which are impossible with men are possible with God. Peter received money from the mouth of a special fish. The gift of children is the possibility with God. Success in life is possible through Him.

4. God is Omnipresent:

God is present everywhere. In His presence, there is fullness of Joy. Presence means the fact of being in a place. You cannot argue in the presence of God.

“Am I a God at hand” says the LORD. “ And not a God afar off? Can anyone hide himself in secret places, So I shall not see him? Says the LORD; Do I not fill heaven and earth? Says the LORD. (Jeremiah 23:23, 24).

These prophetical words describe the Omnipresence of God. God sees all, even anyone hiding himself in secret places. You cannot flee from His presence. God is in Heaven. He guides even in the uttermost parts of the sea. The night shall be light about you. God formed me in the inward parts of my mother’s womb says David. God’s presence is everywhere in the universe.

Omnipresence means all present. This term means that God is capable of being everywhere at the same time. It means His divine presence encompasses the whole of the Universe. God is having the ability to be everywhere or in many places at once. The Bible bear witness to the Omnipresence of God.

“ The eyes of the LORD are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good”( Proverbs 15:3).”For His eyes are on the ways of man, and He sees all His steps”(Job 34:21). “Which is His body, the fullness of Him that filleth all in all”( Ephesians 1:23).

5.God is Omniscient:

Omniscient means that He knows everything, whether past, present, or future. “The LORD knows the thoughts of man, that they are futile”(Psalms 94:11). The LORD searches all hearts and understands all imaginations of the thoughts. There is no searching of His understanding. He knows what is in man. ”For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things”(1. John 3:20).

God knows all things. We know in part. Our knowledge is very limited. We must be humble before God. “ For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect”( 2.Chronicles 16:9). God has all knowledge. Nothing is hidden from the LORD. He is Omniscient. Science means the study of the natural things. I am interested in science. Biology, Chemistry and Physics are all sciences. But, God knows all things. We will study further about God in our next Lesson.
