SURVEY OF THE HOLY BIBLE
By Prof. C. Peter Chandran, Ph.D.,
Professor of the Holy Bible

1. INTRODUCTION: The greek title is Exodus, a word meaning exit, departure, or going out. The Children of Israel had gone out of the land of the Egypt in the third month. The theme of Exodus is " Redemption". Redemption is accomplished only through death. Exodus describes the going out of the chosen people from the land where they had suffered helplessly as slaves for generations. The children of Israel were redeemed from 🇪🇬Egypt through the shed blood of the lamb ( Exodus 12:1-13). See 1 Peter 1:18,19.John the Baptist said: " Behold,, the Lamb of God Who takes away the sins of the world! "

2. AUTHOR: Moses. Theme: Deliverance. Date of writing: B. C. 1450-1410 B. C. The People of God in the New Testament are redeemed by the precious Blood of Jesus Christ to have fellowship with God. He dwells among them in the Tabernacle. A great truths of worship are revealed in the Tabernacle. It also describes sacrifices and Priesthood. We are Royal and Holy Priesthood to offer sacrifices acceptable to God. The " Elect of God" are those "Chosen of God".Jesus Christ is our High Priest. We are also called on to exercise " the Priesthood of the Believer".

3. THE CHRIST OF EXODUS: Exodus is full of types and portraits of Christ. Here are seven:

  1. Moses is a type of Jesus Christ-Prophet, Priest and King.
  2. The Passover: Jesus Christ is our Passover 🐑🥩 Lamb( Jn. 1:29;1.Cor.5:7)." For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us"
  3. The seven Feasts: Each feast portrays some aspect of the Ministry of our Lord Jesus Christ.
  4. The Exodus: St. Paul relates Baptism to the Exodus event. Baptism
  5. symbolises death to the old and identification with the New(Rom.6:3,4; 1.Cor.10:1, 2)." Therefore we are buried with Him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in the newness of life"( Romans 6:4).
  6. The manna and water: The New Testament applies both to Christ( Jn. 6:31-35; 1.Cor.10:3, 4).
  7. The Tabernacle: It clearly speaks of the Person of Christ and the way of redemption.
  8. The High Priest: The High Priest shadows the ministry of Jesus Christ, our great High Priest( Heb. 4:14-16; 9:11-12, 24-28).

Jehovah- rapha= " For I am the LORD Who heals you"

7. TEN COMMANDMENTS: The ten commandments are a summary or basis of the whole law of Moses. Jesus summarised into two commandments: Love God and love your neighbour as yourself. Matt. 22:35-40. 10 commandments are the only part of the law of Moses spoken by God's audible voice to Israel. They are as following:

  1. I am the LORD thy God... Thou shalt have no other gods before Me.

  • And ye shall serve the LORD your God, and He shall bless thy bread and thy water; and I will take sickness away from the midst of thee. There shall nothing cast their young, nor be barren, in thy land., the number of days I will fulfill"( Exodus 23:25, 26).

  1. It records the Historical circumstances of Israel's birth as a Nation.
  2. It contains, in the 10 commandments(ch.20), God's summary of His moral law and righteous requirements for His people, and thus provides a foundation for Biblical Ethics and morals in subsequent revelation.
  3. Exodus is the foremost OT Book describing the nature of God's redemptive grace and power in action in OT terms.
  4. The entire Book is permeated with a majestic revelation of God(a) glorious in attributes, (b) Sovereign LORD, (c) Redeemer, (d) Just and Righteous, (e) worthy of devout worship.
  5. Exodus emphasizes the how, what and why of the true worship that should necessarily follow God's redemption of His People.
